Artist Residencies: June 29 - September 4 2018

At the Hours Festivals, we try our very best to never repeat the same project twice.
For years now, we've talked about how perfect Beulahland would be for an artist-in-residence program.
We finally gave it a shot, thanks to your help!

Please note: Priority was given to folks 1) who have never been to Beulahland before or 2) who traveled longer distances. No money changed hands! Plain and simple.

How it workED (the original guidelines)

Stay at Beulahland

You will have 2 choices of where you can sleep:
  1. In the Addition (guest wing), which is attached to the main house but has its own entrance, 2 floors, 3 beds, & balcony (and electricity).
  2. Recluse Ridge, which is a tiny house (and we do mean tiny!) that was built during 62 Hours by Pressly & Ian (the official Hours Festivals Engineers) at the top of gravel hill, overlooking the majestic Beulahpond
    (and no electricity).
You can choose to stay a minimum of 2 nights, up to a maximum of 6 nights. We are equipped to host up to 3 adult humans. Because this is our first attempt at such a program, we are inviting only adult humans at this time*.

As always, strictly no pets* (and see disclaimer).

Water Conservation

Every year, we talk about how the well at Beulahland is only 14' deep and how we can't afford to have a ton of people bathing, flushing, or washing a ton of laundry. There is an actual risk of running this well dry, and nobody wants that.

Fortunately, we built the:
  • Outhaus mit lasers, during 61 Hours,
  • Outshower mit hot water, during 65;
which everybody uses, even ourselves, during the summer months. Trust us, both facilities are fabulous and unique experiences that you won't want to miss!

The only additional thing we are asking this year is that you bring your own sheets & towels, so that we don't have to do a ton of extra laundry.

Meals

There is an auxiliary fridge in the garage that will be open for you, and we also have a garden and a grill. However, we cannot afford to feed everybody, so please bring what you'd need to be comfortable. Of course, you may also share the main kitchen for cooking & share meals with Jenver the G and Noel/NORM!. Amelia will swing by on a regular basis, too.

Rest + Experimentation  = YES

Year after year, we've noticed a particular phenomenon occur with folks coming to the Hours Festivals from bigger cities: they arrive, breathe deeply, get settled, go to take maybe just a quick nap, and promptly fall into a deep & restorative sleep for many hours. This is totally OK & almost expected by this point.

So, we fully understand if this residency is simply to rest & restore burned out creative souls, who need to pause, take a breath, get centered, and go back out into the world.

Of course, we also welcome and encourage bursts in productivity, (safe) explosions of experimentation, and series of breakthroughs.

We humbly request quiet hours from 11pm - 7am.

Work Spaces & Resources

There are a variety of potential work spaces, depending on your needs. Chances are good that we can accommodate you. Noel/NORM!'s workshop is equipped with all sort of power tools and welding supplies. The upstairs studio has a wall of interesting scraps & standard art supplies. We have a potter's wheel (made from repurposed farm equipment), drop spindles for spinning yarn, some basic silk screen supplies, a sewing machine, and the list goes on.

Of course, bring whatever supplies and equipment you need or want!

Documentation

Documentation will appear one of these days. We promise. Thank you for your patience.

*Just to cover all the bases: We are not an official organization, so we can bend our own rules as needed. We promise to be as fair as possible. Again, the point of this is to provide a space and means for others' creativity to glow. This is purely a labor of love for Jenver, NORM!, and Amelia.
