Saturday, July 1 | Robyn Cueva | "Under the Shadow": Mystery Cards
Artist Statement
I feel blessed to have grown up in Pasadena, California, in the 1960's and 70's, with family trips to Disneyland, a couple of times a year, and visits to the beach in the summer.
My childhood home was filled with music (the Beatles, classical, and show tunes blaring from the stereo), creativity, laughter, and chaos! It was a house of "strong personalities", and I loved that. But I can see now, that because I was shy, I often felt overwhelmed, and so, I enjoyed time alone with my books, toys and crafts. I also had an active imagination, and my friends and I loved to play "make believe".
I'm hoping to recreate some of those impressions, of wild, colorful moments, along with the more serene memories, in these "Under the Shadow ": Mystery Cards.

Annotated Library
Amanda Killian and Isa Elfers
Created by Isa Elfers and Amanda Killian, the “Gray Whale Archive,” is a functional library of 72 books (named after Gray Whale Cove near SF, where we got engaged). We based the idea for this piece on our original 2018 stay at Beulahland; at that time we brought piles of books for reference, but in unpacking and arranging them, found that there was a unique intimacy that comes from bringing together two libraries. Books are personal, and throughout our relationship we have shared books, bought books for each other, and whose books are whose has slowly become fuzzier and fuzzier as our relationship deepens. We curated this library from our collection, creating checkout cards and a custom bookplate, and wrote annotations about all 72 of our books (by hand!) to explain why we chose them. There are books for kids, novels, poetry books, and TONS of loving selected lesbian books. It was a wonderful experience to see folks onsite interacting with them, checking books out, and using the library as intended. We plan on possibly expanding the library to fit more books in our collection in the future!

Bird Haus
The Bird Haus was a long time dream for Norm and JenverG: to create a quiet retreat on the pond to watch birds and enjoy the solitude. And to use up the final sections of Dresser Rand industrial windows, old metal roofing and ancient flooring stacked for more years than necessary.
With the essential help of birder Paul Schmitt, outdoorsman Dan Wilhelm, engineer/builder Ian Keith, all-around handyguy Martin vanderGrinten, and their own four hands, The Bird Haus was laid out at 72 degrees East on the first day of Spring. Building happened throughout the spring as the orientation adjusted to 80 degrees East, but we can live with that.
Needlework from the original 60 Hours Yarn Bomb Tree, orchestrated by Adriana Kramer, and from so many contributors to the 65 Hours Yarn Bomb Luncheonette Sign were lashed into frames to set inside the spaces. Thanks to all the creative help before "72," wooden panels were painted and placed. Fragments of the Satellite Dish Cathedral were lovingly adhered to glass panels.
On June 29, JoAnn Morse Clough blessed/smudged the Bird Haus welcoming in "72." More needlework and artful painting should be finished by the fall migration and Beulahland will be graced with a beautiful Window on Beulah Pond.
